The euro has been the currency in Italy since 2002. Besides Italy, 22 other European countries have adopted the euro for its interchangeability between many of the world's most traveled countries.
Prior to 2002, the lira had been the currency of Italy since 1860. Pictured above are lire coins and paper money. The currency is intricate and could almost be considered a work of art. Today, it is economically beneficial for Italy to participate in using the euro, but old Italian money is still a collectible item.
